Dental care for your pet is essential. At Taylor Animal Hospital of Smithville, we recommend regular treatments for your pet. However, here are some signs that emergency pet dental care may be necessary:
If you notice any of these signs, it's time to contact Taylor Animal Hospital of Smithville immediately.
A dental cleaning, or dental prophylaxis, is performed under anesthesia. Before anesthesia, your pet will have a physical examination, complete blood work, and an IV catheter will be placed. Once under anesthesia, a complete oral examination will be performed, and we will take dental radiographs.
Your pet will have IV fluids during the procedure. The plaque and calculus will then be removed with an ultrasonic scaler. This is a tool similar to the one your dentist uses.
Once your pet's teeth are cleaned up, we can then repeat the oral examination and assess each tooth for gingival pocket depth, root exposure, fractures, or bone loss. Any teeth that are loose, have root or furcation exposure, or have fractures resulting in pulp cavity exposure will be extracted. Following extraction, the gum tissue is closed with an absorbable suture.
For the remaining teeth, surfaces are polished to create a smooth shine, and we will remove stains from the enamel. We do as much work as possible for your pet's dental health.
All pets get an injection of a medication to prevent nausea after anesthesia, and pain medications are dispensed to all pets that need extractions. Antibiotics may be sent for severely infected mouths. Dental cleanings are an outpatient procedure. All procedures are done in the mornings, and pets then go home to their families between 2:30 PM and 5:00 PM.

After getting a new puppy, I tried getting into the veterinarian that we’ve used for our previous pups but they weren’t taking new clients. Taylor Animal Hospital of Smithville was recommended to me, and they definitely did not disappoint! Their staff is very easy to get along with and are always so kind. Even though it was sad to know we couldn’t go back to where we used to, I’m so glad we found a place like this that matches where we used to go. If anyone asks me for vet recommendations, this is where I would tell them to go!
